Preventing Catastrophic Falls: Demystifying Balance and Stability

Falls can be life threatening as people age, but do they have to be? 

In this workshop we’ll consider the question, “Why do we fall?” and we’ll create strategies for how to train yourself not to.

We’ll learn about the elements of balance.

  • Static Balance
  • Dynamic Balance
  • The vestibular system (the inner ear)
  • The somatosensory system (sensation, mainly around our feet and ankles)
  • The visual system (our eyes help us balance)

 

But there’s actually a lot more to staying upright than balance alone.  We’ll talk about stumble recovery, the role of mental and physical fatigue, as well as balance in chaotic environments.

Participants will leave with a clearer understanding and increased confidence in being able to take steps to prevent themselves from falling.

We’ll practice balance exercises that you can do.

We’ll also discuss fall prevention strategies and how to train for effective stumble recovery.
